What’s Changing June 1, 2026
As of June 1, 2026, commercial auto insurers (including SGI CANADA) will require a new document when adding Alberta Class 1 drivers to commercial auto policies.
➡️ Commercial Driver Experience Certificate (CDEC)
This certificate is being introduced by the Government of Alberta to standardize how driver experience is reported across the industry.
What this means for your SK or AB business
When adding a new Alberta Class 1 driver to your commercial auto policy, you’ll now need:
- CDEC (required)
- Letter of Experience (if there are claims listed)
- Clear identification of licence class (Class 1)
Without this information, driver additions may be delayed or declined until proper documentation is received.
Why the change?
This isn’t just extra paperwork—it’s about accuracy.
Insurers want to:
- Better verify driver experience (not rely on self-reporting)
- Separate heavy-unit experience vs. light-duty driving
- Price risk more fairly (good drivers benefit)
What’s not changing
- This only applies to new drivers being added
- Existing drivers on your policy are not affected
- The requirement applies across provinces when adding Alberta Class 1 drivers
What you should do now
If you hire or onboard Class 1 drivers from Alberta:
1. Ask for the CDEC early
Don’t wait until you’re adding them to the policy.
2. Request a Letter of Experience if needed
Especially if there are prior claims.
3. Build this into your hiring process
Treat it like a required onboarding document (same as abstract or licence copy).
Our take
This is one of those changes that will feel clunky at first—but it’s likely here to stay.
The businesses that adjust quickly will:
- Avoid delays
- Keep trucks on the road
- Look more organized to underwriters (which never hurts)
